I have been thinking a lot lately about how small the internet feels now compared to ten years ago. It used to feel like this massive, open world where you could get lost for hours finding weird, cool, and totally unique websites or creators. Now, it feels like we are all just cycling through the same four or five giant apps. Even when you try to find something new, the search results are so heavily influenced by what is "trending" or who has the biggest marketing budget that you just end up seeing the same famous faces over and over again.
The biggest issue for me is the lack of real discovery. Everything is filtered through an algorithm that thinks it knows exactly what I want to see based on what I clicked on three weeks ago. It creates this bubble where you never actually get to see independent artists or performers who are just starting out or doing something niche. I miss the feeling of actually finding a "hidden gem" on my own without a computer program forcing it onto my feed.
I recently decided to stop relying on my usual social feeds and started using a dedicated discovery engine instead. It has been such a relief to just jump into a category or use a random mode to see who is actually out there. I have found so many talented people that I never would have seen otherwise because they do not fit the "viral" mold that the big platforms look for. If you are looking for a way to break out of your usual routine and actually explore again, you can check it out at https://creators.pippinclub.com/. The best part is that it is built for privacy, so I can browse through different profiles without having to log in or worry about my data being harvested just for looking around. It feels much more like the old-school way of exploring the web where you were just a person looking at cool stuff, not a data point for an advertiser. It is a much faster and more honest way to find creators who actually match your interests. Does anyone else have tips for finding independent creators outside of the big social media bubbles? I would love to hear how you guys keep your feeds from getting stale.
